The details

What makes it black tie

Black tie has rules. These four details follow them.

  1. The lapel

    LAPEL Peak or shawl

Peak lapels give a sharp, formal line; a shawl collar is softer. Both are faced in silk.

  2. The front

    FASTENING One button

One button, covered in the same silk. Pockets without flaps.

  3. The fabric

    FABRIC Barathea

A fine, textured wool that holds its shape and colour. In midnight blue, it looks deeper than black in evening light.

  4. The trousers

    TROUSERS Silk stripe

A silk stripe down each side. No belt loops: side adjusters or braces instead.

Questions

Questions about the tuxedo

Where can I get a bespoke tuxedo made in Dubai?

At The Bespoke Corner in Business Bay, in a fabric such as Midnight Barathea, fitted until it is right. Allow about 6 to 8 weeks, so book well before the event.

Peak lapel or shawl collar?

Both are correct for black tie. A peak lapel is sharper and makes the chest look broader; a shawl collar is softer and suits a wedding.

Should my tuxedo be black or midnight blue?

Either is correct. Midnight blue looks richer in evening light; black is the familiar choice.

What do I wear with a tuxedo?

A white dress shirt, a black silk bow tie, a cummerbund or low-cut waistcoat, and polished black shoes. We can make the shirt too.
